As we practice yoga, one of the challenges is to take our time. There are several aspects to yoga which will serve us better if we simply take our time.
How long should we hold a pose?
How long should we practice in a session?
How long should we engage in relaxing meditation as we practice?
How long should we wait to see the physical results?
So many of us want to rush through each pose, and see the results tomorrow. One of the gifts of yoga is the lesson in just enjoying the process.
Taking the time to enjoy each pose and feel how each part of our body must adjust to the pose can bring many benefits as we gain strength and flexibility. As we hold each pose, we are creating muscle memory and allowing our body to support us through a different kind of movement.
Another part of each practice should be a deep and relaxing meditation time. Meditation can be defined by each individual, and is different for everyone. While some may take the time to become more introspective, others may take the time to just quiet their minds and relax for a few minutes of the day. Each person determines what is comfortable or necessary for them.
One of the beautiful things that I have found in yoga, is the vision of what is considered a "healthy body". Yoga is not about what size of pants we wear, but how healthy our bodies are. There is not so much of a focus on weight loss, but more for finding a healthier state for our body. If we exercise and maintain a healthier diet, our bodies will lose weight or gain weight as needed. Our bodies are a valuable tool in our enjoyment of this beautiful world. Keeping our bodies healthy and operating to our greatest benefit is the goal, rather than always striving to reach the illusive dream of dropping another pant size.
Simply finding patience and enjoyment through our journey as we appreciate the benefits yoga can bring to all the aspects of our lives is worth taking our time.
